Näkymä Hannan kaupunkiin Wyomingissa A view over town Hanna |
In southern Wyoming there’s a dusty small town called Hanna. The town is located c.6800 feet above sea level in semi-arid desert. The surroundings are completely different from the Finnish immigrants’ homelands.
Kaupunki on syntynyt aikoinaan (1889) kivihiilikaivoksen ympärille.
The town was founded (1889) around a coal mine. Coal was especially needed to power Union Pacific locomotives. Finnish immigrants had worked on mines in Northern Michigan and Minnesota, as well as Pennsylvania, and had moved to the area when new and perhaps better paid mining jobs opened. The Finns built their own churches and halls in Hanna. Also, a local Finntown, Elmo, emerged outside the town limits.

A major blow to the local Finnish community was the mining accident of 1903. The June accident was an explosion caused by mine gas, and resulted in the death of all but 46 of the 215 miners working their shifts. Most of the deceased were Finnish or African-American.

I visited the town in 2007, meeting a local city council member Bill Klemola, who accompanied me on a tour of e.g the town’s cemetery. Hundreds of miners perished in mining accidents in the area’s mines in its golden era. A memorial has been erected for them with each of their names carved on stone. When reading the names it becomes clear that Finns were the ones hardest hit in the accidents.
Ps. PALAAN UUDESTAAN HANNAN SUOMALAISTEN KOHTALOIHIN KUN EHDIN!!!
